June is World Ocean Month, and it’s our favorite time of year because we can put the spotlight on the ocean and the programs that protect it. It’s also a time to join together to celebrate successes and make a difference for the wonderful communities that depend on it and the wildlife and ecosystems that thrive beneath the waves and on the water’s edge.
From family-friendly outdoor activities to beach cleanups, or simply getting out on the ocean to enjoy the blessings of our incredible good fortune, here are some date to mark down on your calendar, and links to ocean adventures to enjoy in June and beyond.

Daily Sips
Bo’s Beach, and their rooftop lounge, La Playa Dayclub, have teamed up with Papa’s Pilar Rum June through August for Cocktails for a Cause. $2* from every Reef Runner or The Red Reef cocktail sold will be donated to the Guy Harvie Ocean Foundation for Reef Restorations and Rehabilitation. The Guy Harvey Oceanographic Research Center and the Coral Restoration, Assessment and Monitoring Laboratory (CRRAM) at Nova Southeastern University has maintained stony coral nurseries offshore Broward County since 2007. The nurseries currently house over 2,500 corals from eight different species to be used for local restoration, research and collaboration with other universities and stakeholder groups. This restoration effort has outplanted over 12,000 stony corals to 21 sites offshore Broward County. Cheers!

FLIP the FLOP, Recycled Art
Ocean Sole Africa, Inc. will once again pop up at the Las Olas Oceanside Park Farmers Market every Saturday in June in recognition of World Ocean Month. Ocean Sole is a non-profit organization that removes trash from the oceans and waterways around Kenya and recycles it into art. Through this partnership with Las Olas Oceanside Park, they hope to bring awareness to the world-wide dangers of flip flop pollution and inspire market visitors to share our mission of turning trash into treasure! 100% of the profits from all sales benefit programming at the LOOP.
Wednesday, June 8 – World Ocean Day
The concept of a ‘World Oceans Day‘ was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro as a way to celebrate our world’s shared ocean and our personal connection to the sea.
With our seemingly never-ending shoreline, and 300-miles of navigable Venice-like canals, there is no shortage of ocean and waterway activities to experience on Fort Lauderdale Beach. Whether you are looking to take a dive deep, dip your toes, or sail from sunrise to sunset, our article on Top Water Activities offers a variety of ways to get out and truly celebrate, World Ocean Day.
Saturday, June 11
Volunteer at the Fort Lauderdale Beach Sweep
One of the longest running beach cleanups, the Fort Lauderdale Beach Sweep is held the second and fourth Saturday of every month, from 8 AM – 11 AM. Meet at The Hub, 300 S Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd, at the intersection of Las Olas Blvd. and A1A. Volunteers should be at least eight years old (adults must accompany minors) and wear appropriate attire. No pre-registration necessary.
Attend the Sustainable Beach Bash
In partnership with FRASER and YO Synergy, B Ocean Resort and Twenty6North Productions are celebrating their 2nd Anniversary of their monthly cleanups with a Sustainable Bash. The event takes place oceanside from 9am – 3pm and features a Rumble Boxing Fitness Workout, Gentle Restorative Yoga with Whitney, Beach Clean up and Sustainable Shopping.

Stoked On Salt is joining forces with Rock The Ocean this Summer to increase ocean debris awareness and educate our communities on the importance of protecting our oceans. Best of all, when you give, you have a chance to get! All participants 18+ who come out and complete the cleanup will receive (one) free raffle ticket for their chance to win a general admission ticket to the 2023 Tortuga Music Festival. Thursday, June 16 – World Sea Turtle Day
Every year on June 16th, World Sea Turtle Day highlights the importance of sea turtles. The day also encourages global supporters to dive into the threats that sea turtles face.
Sign Up for a Moonlight Discovery with MODS
Every June through August, the Museum of Discovery and Science host the Moonlight Discovery Turtle Walks. Your adventure begins at the Museum with a presentation about turtles and then continues at Fort Lauderdale Beach where a Museum expert guides you to sea turtle nesting grounds. While they can’t guarantee a nesting sea turtle will be spotted on every walk, when it happens, it’s a natural wonder you will never forget! Learn more and register on the MODS.org website
Register for Turtle Treks
Although Turtle Treks will not take place until peak sea turtle nesting season in August and September, registration for the popular program which can possibly provide the rare opportunity to witness newborn sea turtles emerging from a nest is open. Availability is limited to a maximum of 25 participants each 4-hour educational session and ‘Trek’. Tickets are $25 each with 100% of the Turtle Trek proceeds helping to fund organizers rescue operations.
